SocSci 1 Students Learn About Coffee and More

* Last night, four students from Shiela Julianda's SocSci 1 class went to the cafe to experience what it's like to work in a restaurant. The cafe staff divided them into two groups. Half of them worked in the kitchen and the other team helped in the bar and dining area. When I arrived in the evening, I gave them a crash course on coffee-tasting. We sampled an Ethiopia Sidamo brewed in a ceramic manual coffee dripper; a Sleepy Time Blend brewed in a Hario V60 (for contrast); a shot of El Toro Blend espresso; and lastly, an El Toro Blend cappuccino. It was a refreshing experience for me also because I haven't talked about coffee for a very long time now. I've been busy lately learning more about growing vegetables.

Thank you very much guys. It was nice to meet you and I hope you can visit us again!

Here's a reflection from one of the students, Chrissa (as posted in her Facebook page):
"We had to be an employee/worker for a day in our Social Interaction Activity (Sosc 1 class). Our group of four was split into two pairs. One pair helped out in the kitchen while the other worked as waiters. The kitchen team learned how to make some dishes. I was a waitress (yes, the clumsy me waited on tables). Thank goodness I didn't break anything. The cafe was full when it hit dinner time. My partner and I, including the barista, literally dashed around the cafe. It's seriously not easy if you're not used to it...hehe. Learned a few stuff about coffee, brewing it, and making espressos. Working at Cafe Antonio for half a day was a blast! The owners and staff were so kind and accommodating. Wish I could stay longer and learn more. c",)"

Last March 10-11, Coffee Unplugged (Cafe Antonio's coffee catering service) participated in IRRI's International Women's Day Fair together with some members (Satya Graha Cafe and Restaurant, Jus Right, and Makiling Hillside Delicacies) of the Los Banos-based health and wellness advocacy group, The Health Walk.

The 2-day affair was a great bonding experience for the members of The Health Walk.  Cooperation and camaraderie while supporting and recommending each other's businesses are values shared and upheld by the members of the group. Makiling Hillside Delicacies provided organic lettuce for Satya Graha's salad and organic civet coffee for Coffee Unplugged's brewed coffee. Vegetarian and health-conscious clients of Satya Graha and Cafe Antonio were referred to Jus Right while pasalubong-seeking clients were referred to Makiling Hillside Delicacies' homemade treats. Ashoka Indian Healthy Cuisine also placed brochures and calling cards in our respective booths.

It was a great feeling to share and introduce our friends and clients to other establishments who share a heart for serving the community while creating a healthy environment to live in. Good job guys!

Stay tuned for more Health Walk adventures!
