It's Christmas and We Need a Break!

Last week was both fun and very stressful. Although we've already anticipated December to be extremely busy, we didn't expect that it would be THAT busy. The first three days were a rush for all of us. Last Wednesday, when our loyal customer Eric and his band (Peter on vocals and Mark on percussion), performed a 1-hour acoustic set at the cafe, our sales haven't reached the 4K mark yet by the end of the gig at 11pm. We didn't expect much that day since the gig was on the same day as IC's Christmas party--an event where almost every UPLB gimikero/gimikera attends. To our surprise, in the last two hours our sales doubled in a snap, leaving the kitchen looking like UPLB after Milenyo. Customers chilled until 3 AM. That was extremely cool.

As for next week, of course we're closed on the Christmas Eve and on Christmas Day. We are not yet sure if we would open on the 26th onwards. We're still waiting for the go-signal from our bosses in Dumaguete. We're requesting a 1-week break until New Year, giving us enough time to go back to our families, rest, and recharge for the start of 2009. We'll keep you guys posted.

Christmas is this week! To our loyal customers and friends, we hope you liked the Christmas greeting cards we sent you. This is the cafe's first Christmas and we would like to thank everybody for making the season memorable for all of us.

Jesus is the reason for the season, Merry Christmas!

A Successful Teachers' Day Run & the Cafe's First Loyalty Mug Holder

Jomar Rabajante

Ahh Teachers' Day...an activity conceived by a group of DevCom instructors where UPLB instructors and professors would wear aprons, hold trays, and serve their students and co-faculty for 3 hours... what a brilliant idea, thanks to you guys (Sherwin, Aldo, and Candy, haha!) The activity was a box-office hit. Who would have thought that Jomar Rabajante of CAS and Butch Bataller of CEAT are that popular and would go head-to-head in bringing the most number of customers in a single day?

Jomar set the bar high for Butch bringing with him his army of loyal Math 17 students, SAM-UP and Navigators orgmates, and co-faculty last Monday. The cafe had its highest sales for a Monday since OPENING day. Congratulations to you Jomar, everybody enjoyed your bussing skills (Bussing skills? Is that even a word?)

Butch Battaller

The following day, the confident Butch came to the cafe in full attire, complete with black vest and his trademark skinny jeans. He was a force to be reckoned with as he asked for an extension of working hours until 9 pm or 10 pm to accommodate his co-faculty . Although Butch also attracted a battalion of people, it was still Jomar who raked in the highest sales and drawn the most traffic.

Teachers' Day was a success, we hope we could do it again next year. Start volunteering your teachers or colleagues and we'll arrange for another run next semester. Thanks to everyone who came, especially to those who won gift packs! We hope you enjoyed your time at the cafe.

Jeg delos Reyes with Jabez

Congratulations to our first Ako'ng Cafe Antonio Loyalty Mug Holder, Jeg delos Reyes of Biñan, Laguna! Jeg is our graphic artist and is one half of the Azzul Grapika Design Studio duo. Drinking 3 coffee-based drinks a day, Jeg stays at the cafe all day just to complete his loyalty card and get his mug. Siya ay adik talaga, mali na. His Loyalty Mug entitles him to get free drinks and big discounts during Cafe Antonio - Los Baños promos. Congrats to you pare!

Acoustic Gig!
Tomorrow the cafe will be featuring former guitarist of UPLB acoustic group (back in the KA days), Soundhole, Eric, peforming live with his friends. Show starts at 10 pm. We invite you all to come!

We're "Almost Famous" in Entrepreneur Magazine!

FEATURE

Last Tuesday, while I was waiting for my 7 pm shift, I went to the Book Sale beside PCBS to read some magazines. I was looking for the Geek Magazine Rainn Wilson issue, instead I saw Duffy on the cover of Spin just plain lying on the pile of magazines. I picked it up and grabbed a copy of TV Guide as well. It's been a long while since I've bought my usual batch of used magazines (which I use to entertain myself due to our apartment's boob tube deficiency).
I told the guy at the counter (whom I think is the owner of the establishment) that I would just go to the ATM and withdraw some cash. The ATM was temporarily unavailable so I went back and told the owner to reserve the magazines for me.

The next day I went back to the Book Sale and noticed stacks of newly arrived mags. I paid for my reserved mags and asked the owner if they already have a December issue of Entrepreneur magazine. He said yes and that made me pee my pants (well not really, but it would be cool if I did). The magazine costs 125 pesos and I didn't have enough money so I asked the owner if I could just open the plastic and see if we were already at the back of the mag. I asked him, "Can I just take a look and see if we're already in the issue?" He said I had to buy it so I told him I would just take a look-see then pay later. And woaaahh!!! I saw a picture of Joyce and I at the Almost Famous section at the back of the magazine! I had no pimples!

I went back to my favorite ATM at Anest to withdraw from my malignant savings account then bought 2 copies of Entrep. The owner was really impressed as he told me he already read the article. I said, "Yeah, amazing, the cafe's only there across the street..." He gave me back issues of Yes!, OK!, Preview, and Men's Health which really surprised me so I gave him a free Hazelnut Latte in return. Thank you sir, whoever you are!

We already framed the article and displayed it at the cafe. The feeling was surreal, it was really my dream to be featured in that magazine, it was Entrepreneur that inspired me to be an entrepreneur.

What's more amazing is that we already appeared in another major publication in just 5 months (the first one was in the Philippine Daily Inquirer, July 6, 2008) and we'll be only turning 8 months this December.

Amazing grace. That's all I can say. A very classic example of how God can twist your dream plan and turn it into something better.

Joyce and I would like to say thanks to our Dumaguete family for their support, our amazing Canton staff, our families, and our hardcore customers who never cease to be hardcore. Major thanks to Cindy Escobin, the writer of the article, for doing a great job.

Cool December Nights ...

December 1 & 2...very busy! December marks the start of our Loyalty Program, so you better start bringing your cards so we can sign it. Twenty drinks entitles you to an exclusive black mug which you can use for amazing discounts and promos. Here's an example: if you're a Loyalty Mug holder, you can get a free drink of your choice if you can get your friends to come along with you and order one drink each. We are still polishing the mechanics of the promo, but that sounds cool right?!

If you don't have a loyalty card yet, just ask for one at the counter.

We got our industrial blender back last Monday and our December supplies also arrived on the same day. That's a good start for all of us!

We would like to say thank you and congratulations to our Teachers' Day participants Therese Medina of CAS (Dec. 1) and Aldo Lim of CDC (Dec. 2). They both did an amazing job as busboys at the cafe for 3 hours! Thanks also for the people you brought along at the cafe. Next week (December 8 and 9), Jomar Rabajante of CAS and Butch Bataller of CEAT will be our guest busboys. Be sure to come, especially if you are their students! We are giving away gift packs to those who purchase a minimum order of 350 pesos.

We also had our staff pictorial for our Christmas Greeting Card last Monday. Everybody was there except for Ate Vivian. Dan took our pictures. We will be giving away these cards to our loyal customers.

Sweet Indulgence, our pastries concessionaire, sold Elbi Pies at the DL Umali Auditorium before the showing of ELBI PIE (mas pinasarap na icebag). The pies were an instant hit! They will be selling pies again on Thursday. Elbi Pie (Php 15) is available in strawberry and blueberry flavors.

CAFÉ NEWS

So far our sales have steadily picked up since the sembreak. The only significant drop (and thank God, the only drop) in sales was from the maximum high of the week before the sembreak to the maximum low of the first week of the sembreak. Since then we have endured the “ghost town” moments at LB thanks to note-worthy loyalists like the CDC faculty, DevComSoc, UPRHS alumni, and newbies—the UPRHS Seniors.

Our blender broke down last Friday. I have been waiting for that day to come for a long time now. It has taken enough beating; it needs to take a break. Good thing our barista, Neil Rebua, had an extra blender at home. It saved the day for us and it gave us the highest sales for the week. Wow. Kuya Boy got the blender fixed the following day. So right now we have two blenders whirring in the kitchen to irritate your quite moments.

We have high hopes for this week and especially for the month to come. Hopefully Budik’s band can do a gig on Tuesday (10 to 11pm) and we also hope that Noel Sta. Maria can come back on December. Our article on Entrepreneur Magazine would also appear on next month’s issue.

To all our customers, thank you for supporting us. Thanks for all the tips and tricks. And thanks for making the café feel like home. God bless!

THINGS TO LOOK FORWARD TO THIS CHRISTMAS SEASON

The sembreak may have cut down traffic (and our sales) in half but that didn't stop good ol' Antonio from keeping things interesting, thanks to its highly caffeinated crew. Here's a rundown of the things that was and is to come...

BFF'S LAST WEEK
Last week was the last week of the Brownie Fudge Frothiccino aka BFF. It played its last game gracefully scoring 13 orders in 6 days falling only behind reigning MVF (Most Valuable Frothiccino), classic Mocha. It was very emotional, seeing the last two BFFs ordered last Friday by Ate Faye and Ate Marisse's Rural batchmates. Tracy, Neil, and I will miss pulling the big cake container out of the ref and eating the brownie crumbs that fall on the counter. The hassle of making that monster dessert-of-a-drink which Ate Manell orders every time she drops by the cafe will be remembered 'til next year when the BFF makes a comeback on the same month. No matter how much you demand for an extension, we will not give it to you. It will ruin the excitement of waiting, hehe.

Last 2 BFFs

(L-R) Faye, Melo, Sen, Pat, Marisse, Mae

NO FLAVOR OF THE MONTH FOR NOVEMBER
There will be no flavor of the month this month. But that's ok because we will be releasing a bunch of new drinks. Here's a preview of next sem's 08-B freshmen:

Smores Frothiccino - Talk about hassling the barista, this 140-peso drink is a work of art. Layers upon layers of crushed graham, chocolate, and big, soft white marshmallows lined with chocolate and caramel sauces will give you diabetes by the end of the hell week.

Choco Chip Frothiccino - All classic flavors need to be Frothi-cized just like how all great songs need to have an acoustic version or, unfortunately, bossa-fied, grrr...

Overload - If you can't decide between the two flavors, you can just order this monster. It's a Smores Froth bombarded with semi-sweet chocolate chips, because we all need that extra cocoa on our drinks.

Like all of our Frothiccinos, these 3 are convertible to hot drinks for the same price.

Shaked Drinks - We have this shaker that we use for our iced espressos. But who orders those anyway? We gave the shaker a new job, so it would not get fat. We have a new line of drinks, SHAKEN with ice, chocolate, espresso, and cinnamon, not blended. Available in three nutty flavors: macadamia, almond, and my favorite, hazelnut.

Rootbeer Float with that Extra Kick! - For those who want to study until the break of dawn or just want to have that legal extra high, this drink is for you. A buttery-creamy rootbeer float spiked with a shot of espresso to add an extra jolt to your sugar-high.

CHRISTMAS DRINKS - We have 2 hot drinks for the Christmas season. One is the Spicy Mexican Mocha. Tagline: Like the Blood of an Aztec Warrior. And that All-Spice White Mocha drink that has no name yet.

All these drinks will be available after this week. We will be decorating the cafe on November 9 for Christmas. We will also put up new posters of these drinks plus we will be changing our menu board.

NEW DESSERTS
November will feature the release of our chocolate éclairs baked by our talented baker, Ate Marisse. And on December, we will try to add some small Bibingkas to our line, courtesy of my very supportive parents.

RED VELVET FROTHICCINO
Also known as the Raspberry White Mocha Frothiccino, is back! At last!

HOUSEWARMING
Last Wednesday, we hosted a housewarming at our apartment at the Bonita Compound. Everyone was there except Julius and Jeg, hehe. We ate a mountain of food and watched crappy horror movies.
(L-R) Kuya Chroms, Padeys, Manell, Tracy, Marisse, Majals, Chino, Joyce, Faye, Manong

HALLOWEEN MOVIE NIGHT
November 1, should we open? Would anybody bother to come? We opened at 7:30 to 9:00 am just to test the waters, and thankfully, we had one customer order a latte. Tracy went home that day to be with his family, so Retz, Neil, and I manned the fort. Padeys came later. We initially planned to open only until 11 pm since we figured that nobody would come. But we were wrong, sooo wrong. Since we were the only cafe open that night, the whole world came to the shop. We also played 2 movies (Sleepy Hollow, Hellboy) as a treat to our loyal customers who came despite the holiday. Thanks guys! We love ELBI!!!

JEG'S BDAY AT BK
It was also Jeg's birthday that night. He ordered the very first Smores Frothiccino (he was also the first one to order the Blueberry Cheesecake Blended Cream, our first Flavor of the Month) even though it should not be available yet, hehe. He treated us with triple-patty Whoppers which made us moo in delight.

MEDIA
We haven't heard from Entrepreneur Magazine yet, so we're not sure if we'll be appearing on the November or December issue. Anyway, the second semester and the Christmas season looks very promising! We'll keep you guys posted. God bless Los Banos, God bless everyone!

Fresh from Dumaguete!

Sembreak! Good for students, bad for business, hehe. To welcome the sembreak, the Cafe Antonio crew went to Dumaguete last week, October 18 to 20. That's why we were closed last last Saturday. You can view the pictures of our trip at our Multiply page at www.cafeantonioelbi.multiply.com

Everyone was in high gear when we got back from the trip. We decorated the cafe for the Halloween last Thursday thanks to the creative efforts of Julius, Jeg, Joyce, and Yell.

Thanks to the lack of customers (due to the break), we were able to develop a bunch of exciting (and insane) new drinks for the second semester. Our specials (rocky road, choco-peppermint, etc.) will be part of the regular menu starting next sem. Regular customers like DevCom instructors Sherwin, Aldo, and Candy and Papu's Siomai mogul, Kuya Bert, were able to taste test some of our new drinks.

This week seems to be another slow week, but that's ok... we all need a break. Masaya blender namin ngayon, nakakapag-siesta na siya. See you next sem ELBI!

Thirty BFFs Sold!

Blessings just keep on coming. And records just keep getting broken.

Remember the time when we said we can't top the September 15 to 20 sales? Last week, we set another Cafe Antonio ELBI record. We had our highest total gross sales since opening week. And last Friday, we had our second highest total sales in a day (customers ordered 2700+ bucks worth of drinks in 30 minutes), only next to opening day.

A total of 486 customers came in our 37 square meter cafe last week and 30 Brownie Fudge Frothiccinos (BFF) were blended and served--the highest number ever for a Flavor of the Month.

Majals, our part-time cashier was overwhelmed at the flow of customers during their 4 to 7 pm shift last Friday. It was her first time to encounter so many people as cashier and she was very happy to see how her hometown is supporting the cafe. "Umuulan kasi, tapos parang lahat ng taong dumadaan pumpasok dito", she tells me.

The whole week was a riot, especially Friday and Saturday, The crew was in "fastfood mode"--where everyone was shouting and huffing and puffing behind the curtain. Kuya Bert, owner of Papu's Siomai, was part of the Saturday contingent. He brought along our UPLB Navigators alumni and ordered "a million drinks". They gave me a heart attack, but hey, thanks for the support guys!

It was the last week of classes. Maybe that's the reason why so many people came to the cafe. And this week is finals week. We're not sure if most of our customers have gone home or have decided to stay for the sem break. Anyway, we'll never know what's going to happen this week. But one thing's for sure, we'll be closed on Saturday, October 18. The Canton Crew will be flying to Dumaguete City to visit the main branch. We'll be soaking up some inspiration so that we'll be ready for next semester. So expect some changes when you get back from wherever you've been.

IN OTHER NEWS...

* The BFF is still available, be sure to order one soon, you only have a few weeks to go...

* Remember we have Cafe Antonio House Blend Beans available for only 250 pesos. These are the same beans that we use in all of our coffee-based drinks. We will grind it up for you so you can brew it in your home coffee-maker or you could just steep 1 to 2 tablespoons of ground coffee into 8 ounces of hot water to make a good cup of coffee. I'll try to give you some brewing tips when you order.

*We'll be having our photo shoot for Entrepreneur Magazine tomorrow, Monday, October 1. Hopefully we'll be in the November issue, be sure to grab a copy!

* I'll be bringing 3 decks of old school Trump cards tomorrow, plus one box each of Word Factory and Skrib-age.

* We continue to thank God for blessing our business and we are very grateful to everyone who continually supports Cafe Antonio. We hope that we could inspire more people and show them that our generation, the youth, could do so much more! Mabuhay ang mga young entreps!

Brownie Fudge Frothiccino Debut

Last week we had a total of 15 orders of our Flavor of the Month, the Brownie Fudge Frothiccino (only Php 130). The brownies and cake that we use are baked by Ate Marisse.

Here's Kyle with the first order of the Brownie Fudge Frothiccino

In other news...

- Muffins are no longer available in two sizes, we only have the Medium Blueberry Muffin and Apple Cinnamon Muffin available for only 30 pesos.

- Our cook, Tracy, inspired by the barista's latte art and etching designs, figured out a way to design our sandwiches and bread for pasta.

- Pop celebrated his 62nd birthday last Tuesday. My sisters and I gave him a Sony Mp3 player.

- Zadl also celebrated his 22nd birthday last week. Retz surprised him with an amazing cake baked by Ate Marisse.

- Believe it or not, last week was also an amazing week for the cafe, gross sales almost tied last last week's performance (see the "Hataw Elbi, Hataw" entry). We were all very exhausted but very happy. And we are still very inspired at how the community continues to support us.

- Retz, Padeys, Tracy, and I moved out from the Legazpi Compound in Umali Subdivision to the Bonita Compound in Sta. Rita last Saturday. Mommy and his Royal Staff cleaned the place before we moved in. We spent our first night there last night.
- Continue to pray for our article for Entrepreneur Magazine, sana matuloy!

Big News!

Last week was a very weird week for the Canton Crew. We had our strongest Monday since opening week but the following days were not as impressive as last week's "fastfood experience". That was expected, oh my gosh, we can't top that... (and then again we can never be too sure!) I had sore throat last Thursday so I had to stay at home the rest of the day. Good thing Neil was there to take my place.

The next day I came back to work even though I was still a little dry and queasy. Thank God for our 4 to 7 crew, Majals and Neil, they really take the pressure off our backs! It was Friday, it should be our strongest day... but to our surprise, the place was as empty as our wallets. What good thing can happen today?!?! Pegaraw, Rural's major production at DL, was onstage that night. Maybe that explains why there aren't many people around. Our batcmates Michi and Mam Denise was also at the cafe last Friday. Michi was going to watch Pegaraw. Padeys, Joyce, Ate Faye, and Ate Manell also went to watch the play.

After a while, Joyce called... "Hulaan mo kung sino tumawag...", she asked me, "...ay hindi mo pala mahuhulaan..Summit Media (what?!)...Entrepreneur Magazine (ha!??!?)..blah blah..blah" Oh my gosh, I was shocked! Nag-tumbling talaga ako ng literal sa cafe! To break the monotony of it all... ayun... nilagnat ako uli.

It was weird because I've been reading old issues of Entrep magazine lately. Little did I know, mga tsong, little did we know...

The interview was schelduled at 1 pm the following day, so we had to sleep early and prepare the cafe for our guests. Mon and Jenni arrived early, followed by Manong Retz, Dan, Neil, and Padeys.

Ms. Cindy Escobin, the freelance writer for Entrepreneur Magazine, together with our regular customer Sir Eppie (tama ba spelling, sir?) arrived on time. The interview lasted for almost an hour. After that we gave them free Ham and Egg Sandwiches and a Red Velvet Frothiccino. I went home right after, kasi nilagnat ako uli.

Hataw ELBI, hataw!

Last week was our best week since opening week, thanks to all of you!!! We're glad that the cafe is slowly being part of your everyday lives. Marami kaming hardcore customers diyan, saludo kami sa inyo! For two days, we were open until 2:30 am!

What's new at the cafe? For starters, we have a new parttime cashier, Mahalia Adelina Corazon Paningbatan Serrano aka Majals (BS AgChem, magna cum laude, number 5 sa board exam ng chem, grabe!). She'll be part of our 4 to 7 pm crew until November.

From left to right: Neil, Jabez, Tracy, Majals, Manong Retz

Majals will be taking your orders from 4 to 7 pm.

Next is our Text-to-Order service. Just text (or call) Manong Retz the cashier and tell him your orders in advance (0916-7642539).

Have you heard of our Raspberry White Mocha Frothiccino aka Red Velvet Frothiccino? It was a hit last week. It's not on the menu board so be sure to ask Manong Retz about it. This is one advantage of blog readers, you learn about new drinks. Hehe, para medyo exclusive ang dating. It's only Php 95.

There's also this group of street magicians in UPLB. They've been operating for about a sem now. Watch the video below.

The cast of El Laberinto dela Verdad was also at the cafe last week. Of course, they tried the the El La-Berry-nto Multi-Berry Iced Tea (still available for only Php 55).

We were all tired after that week, but we still managed to play Guitar Hero Aerosmith and Guitar Hero III last night. Once again, thanks to the Bonita family!

A brand new week is ahead for the Canton Crew, we hope to meet you guys again. And for those who haven't been here yet, come and visit us at 10432 Grove, College, Los Banos, Laguna. We will change your life, haha! Joke lang.

New Cafe Antonio Jingle Commercial

Good morning Cantonnites! We made a new commercial/music video last Saturday, featuring the Cafe Antonio jingle. Yes, we have a jingle! Available in male and female versions. You can download it at Cafe Antonio - Dumaguete's Friendster profile at www.friendster.com/cafeantonio.

You can also watch the music video at our YouTube channel at www.youtube.com/cafeantonioelbi.

Our Flavor of the Month, the Orange You Glad it's Chocolate frothiccino has enjoyed tremendous success last week. If you haven't tried it yet, you still have a couple of weeks left before September ends.

Any ideas for next month's Flavor of the Month? E-mail us your suggestions at cafeantonio_elbi@yahoo.com.

We would like to thank Los Banos once again for giving their time to visit the cafe last week. We had 102 customers last Friday, that was simply amazing!

God has been gracious to us as He continues to shower our small cafe with blessings. Please pray for the health of the staff, Joyce, Retz, Padeys, Neil, Tracy, Ate Vivian, and myself (Jabez) as we continue to give service (and provide entertainment) to our customers.

Surprises Surprises!

Last Wednesday, Joyce, Ate Manell, Chino, and I, watched the Boys Like Girls mall tour at ATC. Sobrang sulit! Neil was at the cafe to take my place as barista that day.
============================================================

Ate Manell gave this new book, 1001 Dumbest Things Ever Said by Steven D. Price, as a gift for our cafe's couch area library. Check it out. We encourage reading at our place, we will try to get more books for public use.

Last Saturday, Retz, Padeys, and I planned Zadl and Can's first year anniversary. Ate Marisse baked the chocolate cake! It was extremely delicious! We lit the cafe with peppermint-scented candles and made a playlist of Can's favorite songs. We're glad that Can was surprised. Zadl's just really cheesy... haha!

Last Friday, the BLD people surprised Ate Mel with an advanced birthday party, complete with cake and balloons!

An "Adventurous" Birthday (in the words of Dan)

Joey Ramone tells you to buy our ChocNut Frothiccino!

Welcome to Cafe Antonio! We had nothing to do so we made cartoon cut-outs of ourselves. That's Dan, me, and Retz.

Happy 21st bday Dan! Go ahead and enjoy your new friend. We surprised him yesterday by opening early and adjusting the clock 30 minutes ahead. Ate Marisse baked a chocolate cake and eclairs. Joyce and the guys gave Dan a flashlight, hand fan, and small bag from Japan Home Center. Then we gave him the Joey Ramone action figure wrapped in a makeshift cardboard guitar filled with newspaper, a couple of metal bars, and a 1.5 liter Coke bottle we put inside a guitar case so it would appear that we would be giving him a bass guitar. But he wasn't disappointed at all, he loves his Joey Ramone!
